What this site keeps, and what it does not

Everything on this page about what is stored is generated from the list the software itself uses to decide what it may keep. It was not written afterwards as a description, so it cannot say one thing while the code does another.

Everything this site stores

This is the whole list. If something is not on it, this site does not store it.

• Your answers are held only while you are filling out the form, encrypted, and deleted as soon as your letter is ready -- or within a day if you do not finish.

  • This is what it is for: Hold a person's interview answers while they complete one public-records request.
  • Nothing keeps it longer than 24 hours. That is the outer limit rather than the usual case.
  • In practice it goes sooner than that. It is deleted the moment your finished document is ready.
  • It is encrypted by this application before it is written down, so reading the database on its own does not reveal it.

  In the code this record is called Case, and it is held in one table named cases.

What there is none of

• There is no account, no password, no profile, and no history of what you have asked for before.
• Nothing here is sold, rented, or handed to an advertiser or a data broker. There is no arrangement of that kind to end, because there has never been one.
• There is no payment, so there is no card number and no billing address.

The one cookie

This is the one part of this page that is not generated from that list, because a cookie is not a stored record. Every sentence in it is checked against the code that sets the cookie by a test, so it cannot fall out of date quietly.

While you are filling out the form, this site gives your browser one cookie. It holds a meaningless string that points at your own unfinished draft, and it says nothing about who you are.

• It is sent to this site and to nowhere else, and no other site can read it.
• No script running in the page can read it.
• It is sent only over an encrypted connection.
• Another site cannot make your browser send it along with a form or a background request of its own.
• It carries no expiry date, so your browser drops it when you close it and it outlives nothing.
• That is the only cookie on this site. There is no second one, and adding one would mean changing this page.

The deadline tracker sets no cookie at all. It works the date out from what is in the address bar and keeps nothing.

What the server writes down

The server keeps a short note of which page was asked for, whether it worked, how long it took, and which step of the process it was. It does not record what you typed, your finished letter, your name, your address, or what records you asked for.

Nothing is loaded from anywhere else

Every file this page needs comes from this site. There is no analytics, no advertising script, no hosted font, and no embedded widget on any page here. You can check that in your browser's network tab in about ten seconds, which is exactly why it has to be true.
